EBC 2012 | Farewell at Rum Doodles

On Saturday, the Adventures Global team walked the last hour to Lukla in the rain. After hot showers, we met in the dining room for celebration drinks and a meal with our porters and guides. We thanked them for their assistance over the last two weeks and gave them each a gratuity for their hard work.

Yesterday we were up early and, after a quick breakfast, walked to the airport just after the first plane landed. We were on the second flight out of Lukla and soon found ourselves back in the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu. The team spent the rest of the day shopping and chilling. We enjoyed a very emotional and meaningful dinner together at Rum Doodles before heading back to our hotel for a well deserved sleep.

EBC 2012 | Downhill and a birthday

We awoke to a beautiful morning in Rivendell yesterday. It was also Tahlia’s 21st birthday! We all wished her, with the promise to celebrate in Namche Bazaar. We enjoyed a magnificent five-hour walk down to Namche. We had lunch in our teahouse and spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing. Just before dinner, we surprised Tahlia with a handmade card, some gifts and a few bottles of red wine. After dinner we presented her with a cake bearing 21 lit candles with a chorus of Happy Birthday and celebrated a wonderful day in the in Himalaya.

This morning, we left Namche Bazaar just before 8 am. We have a long walk down to Lukla and made a brisk start to the day. We stopped for tea in Bangkar and an hour later stopped in Phakding for a delicious Dhal Bat lunch. We are now preparing to trek to Lukla. It should take us two and a half hours. This is our last leg and everyone will be walking with mixed emotions.

EBC 2012 | Catch-up

More on Tuesday’s adventure . . . Just after dinner, our kitchen staff appeared in the mess tent with a cake and two bottles of wine. The cake’s inscription read Congratulations EBC 2012. We toasted to the mountain and enjoyed a tasty sandwich cake. We were all astounded at the incredible support we received from the local logistics operator, Dream Himalaya. Thanks to our chef Karma and his team.

Yesterday, everyone was up early and ready to leave Base Camp soon after breakfast. Karma presented each of us with a white silk scarf and wished us well on our journey down to Lukla. It was an emotional goodbye as we realized how we had been touched by the mountain and our Sherpa support. It took us six hours to get down to Periche at 4200 metres in cold snowy conditions, but everyone felt good as we had descended 1200 metres. We enjoyed a well-deserved shower before a great dinner and an early night.

Today, after a leisurely breakfast, we left Periche and trekked to Debuche at 3800 metres, our overnight stop. We checked into the Rivendell Teahouse just in time for lunch and spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing in the dining room, reading, playing cards and chatting.
‘We have all gotten fatter after reaching base camp, now we are in Rivendell feeling amazing and the celebrations are starting.’ ~Steve Raiss, on the Adventures Global Facebook page.

EBC 2012 | A day in Base Camp

We woke this morning to a cold and cloudy day. After breakfast a few of us strolled through Base Camp and watched one of the climbing teams sharpen their snow and ice skills on the edge of the Khumbu Icefall. We then walked a short distance into the Icefall, but it soon started snowing, so we headed back to our camp for lunch. It snowed on and off for the rest of the afternoon as we played some bridge. The food in BC has been fantastic and everyone has coped well at 5350 metres. Tonight will be cold again but we move lower down tomorrow where the environment will be a little bit more hospitable.

Tomorrow the team head down to the village of Periche.

EBC 2012 | Base Camp at last!

The team left Gorak Shep at 11 am and very slowly we made our way to Base Camp. We all felt weary after this morning’s climb up Kala Pattar.
We arrived shortly after 1.30 pm and just in time for lunch. Our camp is perfectly located close to the Khumbu Icefall and well laid out, thanks to our local logistics operator, Dream Himalaya.

After a much appreciated lunch, we settled into Base Camp and then most of the team caught up on some much needed rest in their tents. Sadly some of the team members are having to deal with splitting headaches.

EBC 2012 | A trip up Kala Pattar

After getting up at the early hour of 5 this morning, the team left for Kala Pattar by 6. It had snowed overnight, so it was cold to start off with, but the views were incredible. Watching the sun rise over Everest was a breathtaking experience. Besides the cold hands, cold feet, headaches and nausea, everyone reached the 5500-metre summit of Kala Pattar. Congratulations team – you guys rock!
We are now back in Gorak Shep preparing to leave for Base Camp. Everyone is excited.

EBC 2012 | Easter in Gorak Shep

Soon after breakfast yesterday, the team left Dingboche and made our way to Dukla. It was a beautifully clear day and the surrounding mountains were covered with snow. We stopped for tea in Dukla and then climbed up the steep hill out of Dukla and made our way to Lobuche. We arrived in time for a late lunch. The team did extremely well despite a few headaches and some nausea. An early night was had by all.

This morning we left for Lobuche (4900 metres) and trekked into Gorak Shep (5180 metres). It took us a mere 2¾ hours but the walk kicked a few butts. We planned to climb Kala Pattar, but a few of us felt extremely tired and then the clouds rolled in so we have decided to get up early tomorrow morning and climb it together as a team. After lunch, everyone caught up on their communications, reading and rest. The altitude is certainly starting to affect all of us, but we have bonded extremely well as a team and spirits are high.

EBC 2012 | Off to Lobuche

Todays trek takes the team through farmlands and meadows and the village of Duglha at 4620 metres. After climbing up to a viewpoint boasting some stone memorials to perished climbers, the trail drops and follows the valley to Lobuche. The sunset over Nuptse as seen from Lobuche is not to be missed!

EBC 2012 | Dingboche

Today the team take a little break, taking the opportunity to get in a short acclimatisation walk and some all-important laundry! Tomorrow they head into the upper reaches of the Khumbu Valley. Base Camp is looming closer as the excitement builds.

We arrived in Dingboche at 4,400 meters, just in time for social hour and a few games of cards, followed by a delicious dinner by the yak-dung fire burning stove, and lots of laughs before bed. We awoke to a winter-like wonderland of a snow-blanketed valley, and went on an acclimatization hikeup a cliff wall to about 4,650 meters. Tomorrow we are off to Lobouche, located at 4,900. All are getting stronger and feeling good, with the exception of a runny tummy, but we hope to all be on trek tomorrow. We are having the time of our lives!! ~Adventures Global Facebook post by Betsy Bool
