Mount Vinson is located about 1200 kilometres from the South Pole and during the summer – November to January – the team will experience 24-hour sunlight. This icy peak, part of the Sentinel Range, was first summitted in 1966 by Nicholas Clinch and his team. It was named after Carl Vinson, a US Congressman who stood behind the campaign for funding for Antarctic research.
